A business can buy a labeled ad in ChatGPT. OpenAI says advertisers cannot shape, rank or change the answer, so paying for placement does not buy a recommendation.
That distinction matters because four different purchases are often sold as one. An ad buys space near an answer. A retail feed may support ads or keep organic product information current, depending on where it is submitted. An agency fee buys work on the business's public record and measurement. None of these purchases lets a company choose what ChatGPT says.
What a ChatGPT ad buys
ChatGPT ads are paid placements that appear separately from the response. OpenAI says they are clearly labeled, run on systems apart from the chat model and do not mean that OpenAI endorses the advertiser. If someone asks for a local service, an eligible business may be able to place an ad near that conversation. The answer itself remains independent.
Ads Manager currently supports campaigns priced by impressions, clicks or tracked conversions. In the United States, advertisers can target supported states, cities, market areas and ZIP codes. The current minimum daily budget is $25 in the United States and $25 in Canada. Availability, targeting and policy coverage can change while the product is still in beta.
The ad decision is simpler: would a labeled placement beside a relevant conversation produce qualified calls or sales at a sensible cost? Judge the campaign with tracked bookings, completed purchases or another business outcome. A click only proves that someone opened the landing page.
Two product feeds do different jobs
Retailers need to pay close attention to where a product feed goes. OpenAI currently describes two different routes.
The word "feed" can make these routes sound interchangeable. They are not. One prepares products for advertising. The other improves the information available to an independent shopping result. A merchant should ask which system will receive the feed before paying anyone to build or manage it.
Service businesses usually have no product catalog to submit. A plumber, dentist or accounting firm cannot turn a service list into an organic shopping feed and expect a recommendation. Their paid route is an ad campaign, subject to availability and OpenAI's category rules. Their organic route still depends on clear, checkable public information about the business.
- An Ads Manager product feed supplies paid campaigns. Products uploaded through that route are eligible only for ads during the beta and will not appear in organic ChatGPT conversations.
- An organic merchant feed supplies current product information. ChatGPT's product results are selected independently and are not ads or influenced by partnerships. Shopify catalog data is already integrated, and other merchants can apply to provide a direct feed so price, availability and other details stay current.
Paying an agency buys work, not a slot
A consultant can research the questions customers ask, find inaccurate business information, improve service pages, strengthen useful third-party coverage and measure whether the company appears in relevant answers. Those are real pieces of work. They can make the business easier to understand and verify.
The fee does not purchase a position inside ChatGPT's answer. No agency controls the model, and no honest contract can guarantee that one business will be named for every customer question.
Ask an agency to name the deliverables rather than promise the result. A sound proposal might include correcting conflicting hours, writing a missing service page, improving a weak location explanation, documenting a completed job, earning legitimate coverage or setting up a repeatable measurement set. A vague fee for "getting into ChatGPT" leaves too much room for work that cannot be inspected.
If you are trying to understand an existing gap, start with why ChatGPT recommends competitors instead of you. The answer may be missing evidence, weak relevance, inconsistent facts or a competitor that is simply a better fit. Paying for an ad will not repair those issues in the organic answer.
Some businesses cannot advertise yet
OpenAI's current ad policies focus on consumer categories such as household goods, local services, travel, entertainment, digital products and education. Other categories are restricted or reviewed more closely. Legal services are prohibited, while some financial, health and dental advertisers may be considered under specific conditions. Ads and landing pages also have to match the business's real identity, location and service area.
Check the current policy before building a campaign. A good landing page and budget cannot make an ineligible offer acceptable. This is especially important for local businesses that mix ordinary services with regulated claims, such as a wellness business that also advertises treatment outcomes.
Even an eligible local company should treat the channel as a test. There is no useful public benchmark yet for what a local lead should cost on ChatGPT. Install conversion tracking before the first dollar is spent, and decide in advance what a qualified result is worth. Otherwise a promising click report can hide an empty appointment book.
Ask what surface the money buys
Before approving an ad budget, product-feed project or agency proposal, get plain answers to these questions:
This test also protects against misleading reports. If an agency runs an ad and then presents the appearance as an organic ChatGPT recommendation, it is mixing two different results. Save a screenshot or export that shows whether the placement was labeled and which campaign produced it.
- Where will the business appear: in a labeled ad, an organic shopping result, a normal ChatGPT answer or only on its own website?
- Who controls placement? OpenAI's ad system can consider bids and relevance for ads. Advertisers and agencies do not control the organic answer.
- What exactly will be delivered? List the campaign, feed, pages, corrections, research or measurement work instead of accepting a general visibility promise.
- How will success be counted? Use qualified calls, booked appointments, purchases or another business result. Keep paid campaign reporting separate from organic mentions.
- What happens when the payment stops? Ads usually stop with the budget. Accurate pages, business facts and earned coverage can remain useful, although they still do not guarantee a recommendation.
If the goal is an organic recommendation
Spend first on making the business record accurate and useful. The website should explain the services, area, constraints and proof a customer needs to judge fit. Important facts should agree with the Google Business Profile and credible listings. Relevant service pages should answer real buying questions rather than repeat the same copy for every town.
Then measure AI visibility with a stable set of customer questions. Record whether the business is named, why it is named and which sources appear. That separates a genuine recommendation change from an ad impression or a one-off mention.
Paid and organic visibility can run at the same time. Keep the records separate. The ad account should answer whether paid placements create profitable customers. The organic review should answer whether ChatGPT can find enough evidence to recommend the business on its merits.
